Bellarmine Corpus Project

As we prepare to commission a new corpus for our sanctuary cross, we are taking time as a community to reflect on the power of the crucifix. Across centuries, artists have used their unique faith and talents to depict Christ’s sacrifice, inviting those who gaze upon it into deeper prayer.

Currently, our parish is discerning between three exceptional artists to bring this sacred piece to life. The final artist selection will be made by mid-July. Below, you can explore the distinct styles, backgrounds, and portfolios of the three artists under consideration.

Meet the Artists

1. John Leon (Cincinnati, Ohio)

A local sculptor working in bronze, stone, ceramic, and wood, John Leon frequently incorporates natural motifs, geometry, and a spirit of musical improvisation into his art. His unique, textured approach features techniques like draping and dimpling to create evocative, symbolic figures.

2. Ring Studio (Greenville, South Carolina)

Led by artisans Nick and Christine Ring, this family studio specializes in sculpture crafted in the Western classical tradition. They are highly recognized for their talent in sacred design, excelling in the serene and intricate articulation of facial features, naturalistic bodily forms, and the realistic draping of textiles.

3. Wiktor Szostalo (St. Louis, Missouri)

Born in Soviet-oppressed Poland and inspired by the lives of saints and martyrs, Wiktor Szostalo’s revolutionary style reflects a deep childhood faith. His sacred works are recognized worldwide for their non-traditional media-mixing, intense embrace of texture, and dynamic staging of figures.

Share Your Inspiration

While the final selection will be made by leadership, our collective prayer and personal experiences of faith are a vital backdrop to this project. We want to know what draws you closer to Christ when you look at a crucifix.

There is still time to share images of a crucifix that is deeply meaningful to you—whether it is a cross in your childhood parish, a piece from your travels, or a representation that speaks to your personal spirituality.
