Baptism Preparation – Lesson 6

Living in the Light of Christ

Your child’s receiving the light of the risen Lord from the Easter Candle is another symbol that looks forward from the present to the very end of your child’s life. It will be lit again at his/her Confirmation and First Eucharist. It is another joyful symbol of all that your child might become through the Spirit’s guidance until you are all reunited in heaven.

I want to walk as a child of the light.
I want to follow Jesus.
God set the stars to give light to the world. The star of my life is Jesus.
In him there is no darkness at all.
The night and the day are both alike.
The lamb is the light of the city of God. Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus.

Lyrics from “I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light”

Presider: N. receive the light of Christ!

Presider: Parents and godparents, this light is entrusted to you to be kept burning brightly, so that your child, enlightened by Christ, may walk always as a child of the light and, persevering in the faith, may run to meet the Lord when he comes with all the Saints in the heavenly court.

Reflection

  • When has the light of Christ delivered you from some darkness in your life?
  • Who has helped you keep the flame of faith alight in your heart?
  • For whom have you been the light of trust and hope in your life?
  • How has your partner been a light of promise during this pregnancy?
  • Your child’s candle will be entrusted to you during the rite.
  • How will you help your child keep the flame of faith alive in his/her heart?

Sharing

After you and your partner have each had time alone to read and reflect, arrange a quiet time together to share and reflect with each other on these questions.

Prayer

Light a candle. Spend some time praying aloud, thanking God for the people who have been the light of Christ for you in your life. Especially remember your loved ones who are now with the saints in heaven.

Activity

The parish will provide you with a baptismal candle. Or you may choose to decorate and bring your own candle.
